10 Frustrations Only Print Designers Will Understand

“Great print and web design has a lot in common. They both require solid skills in typography, color and layout, to name just a few. But there’s a few ways in which the two fields are completely unique. If you’re a designer who works primarily with the printed page, we want you to know we feel your pain. Here’s a list of annoyances that only print designers will truly get. Let us know in the comments any that we’ve missed.

1. That typo.
If a website or blog goes live with a typo, it’s N.B.D. The developer can just login and make a change within a few nanoseconds. There’s even a chance nobody will notice. But if ten thousand brochures or a hundred foot billboard goes live with a typo, someone always seems to notice.”

  1. I’ll add (FYI the correct term follows the misused term):
    1) Font instead of TYPEFACE. (Damn those writing computer books in the 80s without talking to designers and printers first!)

    2) Vellum instead of TRANSLUCENT. (Damn those scrapbookers!)

    3) Embossing instead of THERMOGRAPHY. (Damn those scrapbookers!)

    4) Creative instead of ARTWORK. (Damn those uneducated newbie designers!)

    5) Non- window envelopes instead of just ENVELOPE. (Damn those sales reps that won’t learn a thing about the industry!)

    6) Designer spreads instead of PRINTER spreads. (Damn those sales reps… see above!)

    7) Card stock instead of COVER weight. (I don’t know who started this!!!)

    8) DPI instead of well EVERYTHING! (Know the difference between LPI, DPI, SPI and PPI)

    and my biggest pet peeve….

    9) Tri-fold instead of LETTERFOLD. (Where’s the third fold people????)

I tell students every day they must learn to be multi-lingual in this business… Printer/Designer (old and new)/Client/Scrapbooker/Computer Textbook Editor/Sales Rep/ Paper Spec, etc… JUST TO COMMUNICATE!
