A year of upheaval
Unfortunately, the on-campus 2020 INK Show scheduled for November, was cancelled due to the Covid-19 Pandemic.
We value the lives of our alumni, their families and friends, Salt Lake Community College, and our community at large. By working together, washing hands, socially distancing, and wearing masks, hopefully the 2021 INK Show will once again return to the SLCC campus.
Artists of all kinds have always used their talents and skills to bring attention to important causes.
We applaud how our alumni have stepped up in this trying year to adapt to a new way of living and participate in change for a better world.
They have brought to light social, economic, political, environmental, and human issues through their considerable skills as designers, artists, and photographers.
For the 2020 INK Show we have collected the work of these alumni highlighting those concerns and much more:

Davin Abegg
““Had to update my RSD poster cause of the date change. Thought I’d do a special Coronavirus variant while I was at it. “
Bradon Anderson
“I’m trying to figure out what to do with the #BlackLivesMatter pins. I want to support the cause.”
Derek & Brighton Ballard
“Design and risograph printed posters for the marches and protests following the murder of Bernardo Palacios-Carbajal. He was shot 22 times in the back by SLCPD.”
“A poster we designed and printed to raise funds for the West River Bail Fund in support of Indigenous land defenders.”
“This was just a logo refresh of the original logo I had created for UAPB back in 2013.”
“I’ve had the opportunity to work with my friend Greg Bennick on several brand assets and supplemental graphics for One Hundred For Haiti. One Hundred For Haiti creates and supports long-term social development and human rights programs related to water safety, roof construction, feeding hungry children, and violence prevention in rural Haiti.”
“Featuring the Niche statues found in the Utah State capitol building. These statues are supposed to represent the values and ideas important to Utah. This poster series is meant to be a revision of these ‘values’ to match the actuality of our state’s priorities.”
Vince Bayless
“2020 Day 164:No”
Keith Beard
“Sometimes our fears are not as bad as we think they are. Just big opportunities waiting to show their power in helping us grow as a person. Growth can be learning to be kind to the things that scare you. Be kind in a world that seems scary.”
Lacee Siler Black

“Working on some marketing for a neighborhood shindig.”
Nadya Bratt
“Last year, I had the tremendous pleasure of helping Abbey Daw launch an incredible new brand called for HER Dream.”
“Abbey has created a company and a platform that is helping women around the world find the courage to be vulnerable and use their voices to share their bold and honest stories. It’s a platform that helps women elevate other women and connect with authenticity.“
“All proceeds from my store will be donated to the World Health Organization’s COVID-19 Response Fund. Help me support the people who risk their lives for us. Let’s fight this together!”

Melanie Bunch
“Summer Camp shirt I designed for this COVID year. Our Taekwon-Do school went to all virtual sessions in mid-March, which meant the cancellation of our beloved annual camp. We traditionally hand out t-shirts at this camp, so we kept at least that part alive, with this shirt design. We also used it as an opportunity to send the message to wear a mask. Our school mascot (a phoenix) is in the top right, wearing a mask. And one of the skills we develop, ‘breath control,’ has been mentioned in conjunction with wearing a mask, at the bottom of the design. In keeping with our long-standing tradition, items that appear white in the design are actually glow-in-the-dark!”
Natalee Chilton Cooper
“Hello friends 👋 I have some exciting news! My new Activism series is now up on my Etsy shop (https://www.etsy.com/shop/DesignsbyNatalee). I will be donating 25% of all sales in my shop to the American Civil Liberties Union from now until the end of the month. Your purchase/donation will help in ending police brutality, demanding racial justice, and fueling the legal battles and urgent advocacy efforts. I love and appreciate all the support I have had with this new series and know that if we all work together we can create change.” #artforchange #blm #blacklivesmatter #wearetogether
“Dinner is served. VOTE with a side of – you have a voice, use it!”
Anna Marie Coronado
“Thankful to still be getting to help on the taskforce. Remember to check out coronavirus.utah.gov for important updates and information.”
Helen Cox
“It has been an honor to spend the last week reflecting on some of my black heroes and sharing their messages and faces. Due to Covid and caring for my family, I cannot risk going to protests. However, it was not an option for me to not contribute to this movement in some way, so I decided to do what I do: create.”
“I hope these have given some meaning to someone out there. I am considering making some prints and donating the profits to the Black Lives Matter Global Network. If anyone is interested in something like that, please let me know. If not, feel free to save these digital copies. I also have PDF files for anyone who would prefer to print at home: bit.ly/helenalux-black-heroes. Much love to everyone right now during this crazy but important time in human history.”

“This piece was added because I felt we don’t know how much something as precious as life means to us, until we lose it. We often forget to be grateful for every minute.” ~ Kerry Gonzáles
Karli Duisen
“Early on in the pandemic I got to design a magazine cover to represent the crazy times we’re living in. Then months later—times are still crazy—and I was asked to make a new fun cover with corresponding graphics for an event. Then, I wrote a short little thing for my work’s blog about that second project. Not usually a writer kind of guy, but you can check it out if you want to.”

“One of our clients at the agency I work at in Portland is called Place Matters Oregon and they are trying to push for policy change around various issues. Their focus is on health disparities driven by the inequities that are woven into the places of our everyday life. We’ve just wrapped up a mini digital campaign where I made over 80 gifs displayed as digital ads meant to drive people to the different pages on the Place Matters site. Here are a few examples of some of them.”
Amber Giles
“A serious understatement for the events of today but very grateful to be safe.”🙏🏼

“Oh students, how we miss you! We cannot wait till the day when we can have you talented people back in the studio creating beautiful things. But for the time being virtual classes seems to be doing the trick. 🙂 Here is what we painted with one of our students over a FaceTime art lesson today. We can still have have great art lessons through technology!” ~ Black Rabbit Studios

Magen Mitchell
“This painting was Magen’s way of expressing her feelings about trying to live a “normal” life during the pandemic, the death and rebirth of our brand, as well as a critique of social media, which she feels is undervaluing the art market and hurting artists more than it helps them.” ~ Nick Burke of Obake Style
“The first Medieval memento mori paintings were commissioned by wealthy patrons as reminders to remain humble because death would fell powerful kings, holy bishops, and beautiful maidens without regard for status or piety.”
“I was particularly inspired by a 17th century woodcut print in which the figure of Death, frocked in the symbols of royal power, holds a mirror to the viewer that reads ‘The mirrour which flatters not.’ I wanted my piece to feel relevant in our modern, kingless society so I decided to go back to the opposite end of the spectrum and depict the figure of Death in a common, everyday scene; killing time in vain pursuits with a modern, digital mirror.” ~ Magen Mitchell of Obake Style
“For those of you who don’t follow us on Instagram, Magen will be donating 100% of the proceeds she makes from sales in her web shop today and tomorrow to COVID relief here in Salt Lake. If you’ve ever had your eye on any of her art, now is a good time to grab it.”
Ingrid Shoemaker
“Shop the Hope Collection today and 100% of the proceeds will be donated to @ourrescue in the fight to end #humantrafficking for #worlddayagainsttrafficking
“Human trafficking happens all over the world, and in every state.
There are 30 million people currently in slavery, with approximately 10 million of those being children.” 💔
@ourrescue just rescued their 4,000th survivor, which is so amazing! But there are so many more out there that are desperate for freedom.”
“So visit @ourrescue to learn more about their rescue efforts and aftercare programs, and how they assist law enforcement in taking down the rings that have harmed so many people.” 💙
