Aaron Draplin “Tall Tales From A Large Man”

Using scientific proof and state-of-the-art multimedia techniques, Aaron James Draplin of the Draplin Design Co. delivers a suckerpunch of a talk that aims to provide bonafide proof of work, the highs and lows of a ferociously independent existence and a couple tall tales from his so-called career in the cutthroat world of contemporary graphic design. Just a regular American guy with a trajectory a little dirtier than yours, his talk is open to all oncomers brave enough to show up. If you are a youngster, you may find yourself inspired to attack your design future in a different way. If you are established, you may just leave feeling grateful you don’t have anything to do with him. Hard to say. All Salt Lake City champion citizens are invited to attend. Be there!

The review is open to observers until about 4:00pm. If you are not a participant, we HIGHLY recommend that you attend as an observer.

The 2012 Art Showcase Awards Ceremony is TONIGHT @ 7pm in the OAK ROOM on the 2nd floor of the Student Center (Taylorsville Redwood Campus). At the awards ceremony, Kristy Sabey will be presenting the first ever INK SLCC Student Choice Award on behalf of INK SLCC.

INK MEETING

Our first official order of business is to announce the next INK SLCC meeting!

ART SHOWCASE VOTING

As we mentioned in our last meeting, INK SLCC is sponsoring a student choice award for the 2012 Student Art Showcase. This will be the first student elected honor that has EVER been awarded. The show will be open for a private review from April 4th from 3pm-5pm. Only second year students are eligible to vote for their favorite piece. We’ll be sending out a reminder to eligible students prior to the review date so we can be sure that we get as many votes as possible. Voting will be done online here at the INK SLCC website the very next day, April 5th. So be sure to write down the artists name, the title of the work and the artshow article number to cast your vote.

Don’t forget, we still need to name the award so submit your ideas to inkslcc@gmail.com or bring your ideas to the meeting on March 27th.

EVENT: AIGA Student Portfolio Review 2012

Now that INK SLCC is an OFFICIAL AIGA Student Group, it’s time to represent.

Registration for the 2012 AIGA Portfolio Review is now OPEN!!!

The AIGA Student Portfolio Review may very well be THE most important AIGA student event of the year. In fact, many  Visual Art & Design programs at other colleges around the state require attendance. And in some cases, it’s considered their semester FINAL.

Here’s the info: 

AIGA Salt Lake City’s annual Student Portfolio Review provides advice, insight and industry information to design students from around the state. On April 6, 2012, students will interact with professional designers during portfolio reviews and one-on-one interviews. Students gain valuable career insights and make connections which can lead to internships and even jobs.

This is a great opportunity to check out the competition and get feedback on your portfolio as a developing student and it only happens ONCE A YEAR so let’s represent and show them what we’ve got!

PRE-Registration ends on April 5th, so whether you plan to participate or attend as an observer, do NOT miss this. Space is limited so come to represent INK SLCC and reserve your spot TODAY!

Perfect Portfolio Photography on a Brown Bag Budget

As many of you know, a few weeks ago – on the 8th of February, to be more specific – some of us attended the AIGA event “Perfect Portfolio Photography on a Brown Bag Budget”. Trevor Woods and Ben Kuhns from Lunar/Solar Creative showed us how to properly and inexpensively photograph portfolio pieces to get polished, professional results. What is more, they were kind enough to send us a .PDF full of tips after the event! And so, to spread the kindness, we share it with you: Photo Guide

Volunteers Needed for SLCC’s Art Showcase

On another note, the VAD department needs student volunteers to help out for the duration of the 2012 Art Showcase. The show runs from April 9th until April 19th and volunteers are needed for 3 hour time intervals between 12 – 3pm and 3pm – 6pm. Your duties as a volunteer will be simple: all you’ll have to do is accept artwork submissions, help students with the paperwork and keep an eye on the show in general. For your convenience, we have created a spreadsheet where you can sign up for the specific time slot you prefer.  Go check it out, sign up and help us make the Art Show awesome! Oh, and you will receive an awesome INK T-shirt which you could wear while helping out.

Andrew Wilson will be at the next INK meeting if you need more information concerning volunteering for the Art Show.

Design Week San Francisco

At the last meeting, we proposed a trip to San Francisco during June 11th – 17th in order to attend Design Week San Francisco. For the time being, there isn’t much posted about particular events but we will keep you updated as information becomes available. Right now, we would like to know which of you would be interested in this trip and available to go so we could plan accordingly and draft a proposal. So, this said, if you are interested and you know you can make it, let us know by filling out the form below.

Before we dive into event updates, we would like to extend a big “Thank you!” to everyone who attended the INK SLCC Open House last Tuesday.
