INKTOBER ALUMNI FOCUS: Davin, Sharon, Ben, Magen, Sam, Matt, Chris, Traci, Jen, Emily, Missy, Lauren

What’s Inktober?

From Jake Parker:

“Every October, artists all over the world take on the Inktober drawing challenge by doing one ink drawing a day the entire month.

I created Inktober in 2009 as a challenge to improve my inking skills and develop positive drawing habits. It has since grown into a worldwide endeavor with thousands of artists taking on the challenge every year.

Anyone can do Inktober, just pick up a pen and start drawing.”

In 2010, Salt Lake Community College Visual Art & Design Graphic Design students Nadya Bratt & Casey Kim created INK as a club for anyone interested in Graphic Design. After their graduation from SLCC, INK evolved into an online source for those passionate about the visual communication industry by offering access to news, resources, and networking.

VAD Associate Professor Kerry Gonzáles and caretaker for INK, is proud to share the talents and creative directions taken by Alumni & Friends of INK in this – the third annual – INK, an Alumni Art & Design Group Show.

Each piece showcases the design process from initial research and ideas to a completed product. And most importantly… how a good foundation in graphic design is used in a multitude of careers.

ALUMNI FOCUS: Davin, Ian, Alissa, Katrina & Hilary

Davin Abegg

Based out of Utah, Davin Abegg runs Swoody Records, a lo-fi, experimental label that showcases artists from across the nation. Photo: John Barkiple

From SLUG Magazine:

“Swoody Records is a Utah-based label that’s been putting out loads of obscure and strange music since its inception in 2013. Many of its artists are bedroom-based—they rarely (if ever) tour or play live, and the music comes from just about every corner of the country, making it difficult for local buzz to promote the artists. Despite all this, about four years and 30 releases deep, Swoody continues to be a unique and prolific label. Founder and label head Davin Abegg seems to intentionally keep the label’s purposes enigmatic, enjoying the feeling of haziness and discovery that marks a lot of Swoody’s music.”

Kudos Davin!

“The nerds have had their revenge: Geek culture is now mainstream culture, with nerds ruling movies, books and television. The mythology of current pop culture is largely based on variations on the theme of being a geek, not fitting in. ComicCon, TV series like The Big Bang Theory and Silicon Valley, online retailer Think Geek and others have shown there’s big money in the preoccupations of the socially frustrated class.” – By
