GD&C Students at Skills USA

2019 SkillsUSA Competition

From SkillsUSA:

SkillsUSA’s 55th annual National Leadership and Skills Conference — including the SkillsUSA Championships, a showcase of career and technical education students — was held in Louisville, Kentucky, June 24 – 28, 2019. More than 15,000 people, including students, teachers and business partners, participated in the week-long event.

SLCC Visual Art & Design Department Assistant Professor Virag White accompanied three very talented Graphic Design & Communications students to this year’s competition. Sandra Castaneda, Maja Keefer, and Allen Muy took part in the week-long contest. All three placed!

Sandra was awarded Bronze in Graphic Imaging – Sublimation, and can be seen in the closing ceremony photo above.

Maja received 4th place in Advertising Design. And Allen received 4th place in Screen Printing.

It wasn’t all work though! Virag, Maja, Allen, and Sandra took some time off to enjoy a Louisville Bats baseball game!

Many thanks to Virag for her time spent as an expert advisor!

We’re so very proud of Sandra, Maja, and Allen, and the exceptional skill they demonstrated at this competition. It’s a major coup that these three all placed in this prestigious national event.

Congratulations to all!

2019 AIGA Student Portfolio Review

The 2019 AIGA Salt Lake City Student Portfolio Review was held Saturday, April 27th at the Adobe Campus in Lehi. This was an opportunity for students to gain valuable advice, insight, and industry information from some local professional designers and agencies. Two guest speakers, Justin Mezzell and Rogie King from Super Team Deluxe gave an inspiring and insightful lecture on what it takes to be a success in the industry.

Thirteen students from Salt Lake Community College Visual Art & Design Department – Graphic Design & Communications Portfolio Development class presented their portfolios.

SLCC GD&C students presenting: Kristin Adams, Sabrina Dean-Perry, Allison Fisher, Kayden Groves, Lisa Hall, Maja Keefer, Alex Israel Martinez, Heleman Martinez, Blake Peterson, Jessi Sauer, Kesia Timoteo, Hali Vanderburg, and Jazz (Albert) Vitale.

Many other GD&C students attended as observers. This was especially important for beginning design students to see competition from students attending the University of Utah, Weber State University, Utah Valley University, and Utah State University.

Both Assistant Professor Virag White, instructor of the Portfolio Development class, and Associate Professor Kerry Gonzáles, GD&C Spec Rep, attended the event to give their support to these hardworking and talented students. Both were (and are always) extremely proud of their students and wish them the best of luck in their careers.

Wonderful work everyone!
